iPhone Dictation: How to Enable Speech to Text, Fix It and Dictate in Any App

Your iPhone can already write while you talk, with nothing to install. Speech to text on iPhone lives inside the iOS keyboard: tap the microphone, speak, and the text lands in whatever app you're in. Here is how to turn it on, use it everywhere, fix it when the microphone disappears, and when an AI dictation app is worth it.

How to turn on dictation on iPhone

iOS dictation is enabled once, in Settings, per Apple's iPhone User Guide:

1. Open Settings › General › Keyboard and turn on Enable Dictation.
2. In any app, tap a text field to bring up the keyboard.
3. Tap the microphone icon 🎤: bottom right on Face ID iPhones, left of the space bar on Home button models.
4. Speak naturally. Tap the microphone again to stop, or just pause: dictation ends on its own after about 30 seconds of silence.

One detail that matters in practice: the keyboard stays on screen while you dictate. You can dictate a sentence, fix a word by hand, then carry on speaking without breaking stride.

Dictating a message, an email or a note

Voice to text on iPhone belongs to the keyboard, not the app, so the gesture is identical anywhere a keyboard appears: Messages, Mail, Notes, WhatsApp, Safari, Word, Slack or any search field. To dictate a text message on iPhone, tap the message field, tap the microphone, dictate, read it back, then send. To switch dictation language, press and hold the globe key 🌐 first: dictation follows the active keyboard. And for fully hands-free use, ask Siri to send the message for you.

Punctuation and voice commands

This one is widely misunderstood: since iOS 16, Apple's dictation adds punctuation automatically in supported languages, contrary to what a lot of older articles still claim. To force a specific character, Apple documents commands for dictating text such as “comma”, “question mark”, “new line” or “new paragraph”. It does well on short, clean sentences; on a paragraph dictated in one go, it rarely breaks the text up the way you would have written it.

Does iPhone dictation work offline?

Often, yes, and it's a real advantage of the iOS ecosystem: Apple processes dictation on the device in many languages, so it keeps working on a plane or with no signal. Per Apple's Siri and Dictation privacy notice, your iPhone says in Keyboard Settings whether audio stays on the device; otherwise it goes to Apple's servers. More in our local vs cloud comparison.

Dictation not working, or the microphone is gone

In the vast majority of cases, one of these four explains it:

• Dictation is switched off. Check Enable Dictation in Settings › General › Keyboard.
• A Screen Time restriction is blocking it. The cause people forget, common on a phone set up for a child or issued by an employer: Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions › Allowed Apps, turn on Siri & Dictation.
• The keyboard isn't supported. With a third-party keyboard, or a language Apple doesn't cover, the microphone may not show up. Switch back with the globe key.
• Hardware or a stuck state. Check that a case isn't covering the microphone, test a recording in Voice Memos, then restart.

How to turn off dictation on iPhone

If you keep hitting the microphone by accident, it's the same path in reverse: open Settings › General › Keyboard, turn off Enable Dictation and confirm. The microphone icon disappears from the keyboard in every app, and the same path switches it back on.

The limits of built-in iOS dictation

Apple's dictation is fast, free and privacy-friendly when it runs on the device. Its limits show as soon as the text gets longer:

• It writes what you said, not what you meant. The “ums”, the false starts and the sentences that trail off all land in the text as-is.
• No formatting. An email dictated in one go comes out as a solid block, which you then break up by hand on a phone screen.
• No grammar or style cleanup. Apple Intelligence Writing Tools can rewrite a text, but that's a separate step, on supported iPhones only.
• Industry vocabulary. Legal or accounting terms, client names, internal acronyms: generic dictation mangles them, and nothing teaches it your words. See dictation for lawyers.

On a text message none of this costs you anything. On a client email or a report, you correct with your thumbs and lose part of the time saved.
